Our History
Founded in 1968, Valairco has been driven by our desire to put our customers first since day one. Our founder, Richard Valenti, worked hand in hand with his father Joseph Valenti to build the company and develop our now-renowned HVAC services. Our family has been in the air conditioning business since the dawn of the industry—Joseph worked with Dr. Willis Carrier, the inventor of the modern air conditioning system.
When Joseph graduated from the Cooper Union, there were less than 100 people in the air conditioning industry across the nation. His son, Richard, grew up around the industry, and saw an opportunity to grow his own business in Berkley Heights. While less than 10% of the national air conditioning market was saturated, Richard went to work to establish Valairco as the industry leader in all things heating and cooling. At the very beginning of our family business, Joseph and Richard worked together as design engineer and sales engineer, respectively, and worked with a third party to handle production and service.
Today, Valairco is headed by our third generation of family. Kevin McHugh, owner of Valairco, is the nephew of Valairco founder Richard Valenti. Kevin has worked for Valairco since his summer apprenticeship days, and finally took a full-time role at the company in 1988. In our more recent history, Kevin has been instrumental in keeping Valairco abreast with the changing times and is responsible for our innovative customer service programs, designed for the 21st century customer’s needs. While Richard, now 80 years old, has passed the torch to Kevin, we’re glad that he still plays an active role in our day-to-day business.
